Since our establishment in India, we have faced a multitude of issues but undeterred, we have devised several solutions that help us continue sharing the gift of health & nutrition with underprivileged children.

Here, take a look.

THE PROBLEM

Malnutrition in India has scarred the lives of millions of children; it is home to 46.6 million stunted children, a third of the world’s total as per the Global Nutrition Report 2019.

  • India contributes 20% under-five mortality and 25% of neonatal mortality, globally.

Children struggle with a lack of nutritious food, which leads to malnourishment. Malnourishment is a health problem resulting from inadequate and suboptimal nutritional status, caused by poor and unbalanced consumption of macronutrients and/or micronutrients.

Among the 472 million children (2011 census), 97 million are anaemic and undernourished.

Malnourishment adversely affects the brain development of a child, leading to long-lasting and irreversible damage. It results in tissue damage, growth retardation, heterogeneous differentiation, a decline in synapses and synaptic neurotransmitters, delayed myelination, and overall degraded development of dendritic arborization of the developing brain.

In India, lakhs of infants & children succumb to diarrhoea, pneumonia and/or infection every year.

For children five years or younger, close to 40% (actually 38.7%) are stunted (below normal height for the age), 19.8% are wasted (underweight and short) and 42.4% are underweight. The data-set revealed by the latest NFHS-4 stated that 40 out of 1000 infants don’t make it past their first year.

Maternal Health in India remains a big concern.

Maternal health is a big issue in India, especially among girls under 18 years. Several factors lead to adolescent pregnancies and births. Young girls who may want to avoid pregnancies may not be able to do so because of knowledge gaps and misconceptions about where to obtain contraceptives and how to use them.

Lack of awareness about malnourishment among parents can severely affect children in the long run.

Uneducated parents in rural and urban areas belonging to economically weak sections are usually unaware of the risks of lack of proper diet. Adding to this dilemma, there are many families which cannot afford feeding themselves.

Lack of sanitation can cause various illnesses.

Children at one in three schools do not have access to proper toilets, putting them at risk of diarrhoea and other infections and forcing some to miss school altogether. Moreover, lack of safe water is a problem too. Substandard sanitation is linked to the transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio and also results in stunted growth. It reduces human welfare, social, and economic development.

It becomes very important to normalise conversation around menstruation.

Apart from the stigma many girls face, the status of menstrual hygiene of many girls is a huge health risk. The lack of information about menstrual hygiene creates a culture of taboos and misinformation about menstruation and potential health risks like vaginal infections.
