“Interning at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP has been an enriching experience for me. I was genuinely impressed by the organizational structure of MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP which is a perfect combination of an NGO working in a corporate way. During the internship, I everyday learnt something new from my colleagues here. I gained an immensely satisfying experience, be it regarding the documentation, following-up with the partners over programmatic requirements or preparation of project reports. I was highly privileged to have visited a Mission Education centre in Satyaniketan on the very first day of my internship, where the children were preparing for an event and I helped supervise their preparations. All the employees have been very encouraging and supportive throughout the course of my internship. So, working with the weaker section of society was a new learning experience and felt very rewarding. India has grown leaps and bounds since its independence but where education is concerned, the gap between women and men is severe. I believe that with its “Swabhiman” programme for women and girl child development, MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP is helping fill this gap. Doing field work, performing group discussions with women and children in the identified communities, having face to face conversation with them and seeing their confidence has convinced me that Swabhiman is opening doors of opportunities for many women and girls.”

“Being a fresher, this was the first time I was exposed to a formal workplace, which, indeed, was an enthralling experience. After being cognizant of the kind of the work done by MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP in general, and STeP specifically, I felt contended and relieved that, in this modern capitalistic world, there still are some people, some organization which are working for the greater good of society, and helping marginalized group of people by playing a role of catalyzed to uplift them from the abysmal condition many of them find themselves in. The wide array of work done here at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP surprised me. Since my stint with the organization was only for a small tenure of 3 weeks, or 15 working days to be specific, I was allotted a small fraction of work, which, I tried to complete with utmost sincerity and diligence. Some of the works which I was allotted include writing case studies or success stories of candidates who were trained at different STeP centers across India mentioning about their family background, about how they were trained and bagged jobs, and how STeP played a catalyzing role in bringing a positive change in their, and their family’s life. After going through the raw data about them, I felt desolate that there are so many people in our nation who are devoid of resources, who face harsh side of life, but at the same time motivated me that no matter how big the problems are, one, if he is motivated and confident, can cross those hurdles to emerge victorious in life. Some other work which were allotted to me include speaking to ROs of different STeP centers and coordinating with them to get the raw data transferred on updated excel based questionnaire which help STeP employees track the necessary information easily. Writing in brief about various programs conducted across India was also one of the few works that were assigned to me. Now, when my stint is about to get over, I, wholeheartedly, enjoyed the work that was assigned to me and tried my best to complete the work to the best of my abilities. There are a lot of positives that I would be carrying after this internship. The always exuberant and cheerful attitude of employees motivated me to strive better and brought a Mpeg on my face. The punctuality and diligence of people here enlightened me about work culture which I wasn’t exposed to hitherto. I shall keep these points in my mind whenever and wherever I am assigned work. In the end I would like to thank my mentors Ms. Vaishali and Mr. Tony Thomas who always encouraged me and taught me how to improve whenever I made any mistake in carrying out assigned work. “Volunteering at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP under Swabhiman, I understood that altering people’s lives is not a myth. The vision and concept of Swabhiman has had a great influence on me, improving my perspective on life. Change begins at home. ‘You educate a man, you educate an individual; you educate a woman, you educate the Nation’. Once you show them the right direction, women are willing to amend the entire community. During the capacity building sessions at Swabhiman, I grasped the significance of offering a child the choice of informed decision. After they realise what is right from wrong, they can guide their respective communities in the appropriate direction. Apart from reporting the daily proceedings, I had an excellent opportunity to observe how Swabhiman as a programme took initiative to transform itself by objective evaluation of their capabilities and future possibilities. My project responsibilities for the internship were to provide analysis of the sessions and preparing reports to be presented to the supporters of Swabhiman. I was also included in various events related to the organization. In addition, I helped to organize the training sessions on women’s issues attended by the volunteers, health educators and beneficiaries, which added yet another facet to my understanding of Swabhiman’s community relations. It has been a great way to learn more about the incredible work that MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP is doing every day. The environment that I worked in was dedicated and encouraging; I was treated as a friend and a colleague from the initial day and was wholeheartedly welcomed to the Swabhiman team..”

“As a part of my MBA course, I was required to work with an NGO, so that I get an exposure as to what and how things are done in a NGO. I choose to work for MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP. At MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP I was provided an opportunity to work with the Outreach team for Mpeg on Wheels program. During my stint at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP, I was able to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge of what goes behind making Mpeg on wheels program a success. Initially, in order to sensitize on different kind of works done by the outreach team, I was given a task of proofreading a report that was to be submitted to the donor. This task helped me get an inside knowledge on the various activities carried on by the outreach team. After this I was asked to plan activities for a year time which included six health camps, fifteen IEC camps and fifteen special health camps. This task required me to understand the kind of programs that MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP could conduct. Further, it also required me to keep in mind the kind of people who would benefit with these programs. My responsibility was to come up with activities that would have an impact on maximum number of people in the target group. After this, I was asked to go to a Mpeg on Wheels camp to see how things are done at the ground level. I along with the Mpeg on Wheels team visited Sanjay Camp at Chanakyapuri. There I was able to gain practical knowledge as to what happens in a health camp. It was quite an eye opener for me seeing the health condition of the people living in that slum area. I got to know how SOW was making a huge impact on these people. It was surprising to see how some people are totally dependents on camps like these as they cannot afford to go to hospital. However, this program made me aware about how so many things can be done for the betterment of the society. During my internship, I also got an opportunity to work on Mpeg on Wheels Management Information System (SOW MIS). Mpeg on wheels is a PAN India program and has been trying to go online in order to manage the information and data. My responsibility was to go through the website and provide feedback to the developer about the changes and additions that were required to make the website more users friendly. Further, I was also asked to prepare a user guide for the program coordinators. I prepared a user guide with all the steps to be followed with the supporting pictures. This guide has been prepared in such a way that anyone can use the website easily with the help of the guide. Further I was also asked to feed data in the website. Data for vehicle, equipment for the different running projects has been entered in the website. This internship has taught me many things and helped me grow my personality. The things that I have learned here will of great help in my career ahead. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my mentors Mr. Ayaz and Mr. Prateek who kept me motivated and encouraged to learn more during my stay here. “I have been working for MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP in between 13th October 2013 and 9th January 2015 for a period of 12 weeks. During this period I was engaged in the work of the Mpeg Twin e-Learning Programme (STeP), Outreach, Mpeg on Wheels (SoW) and shortly Swabhiman. I enjoyed my time with Mpeg. The work everybody does here cannot be honoured high enough. The people are all very helpful – especially when the language barrier stops me of continuing my work and the coherence among the team members is impressive. After a slow start of getting to know the workflow and the programmes, I asked to be more included into the work and in response got more responsibilities in the STeP team (individually renewing the Case Study management & working on centre proposals). The longer my experience with Mpeg the more trust was put into me on working on several tasks individually – mainly in the Outreach & SoW department – which I appreciate a lot. Besides the above mentioned tasks, I went on a field appraisal on a potential new centre in South Delhi and wrote due diligence documents to present prospective centres to the donor for STeP. My engagement for Outreach & SoW covered research on current health issues in the respective areas of intervention, writing, compiling and checking monthly, quarterly, annual and completion reports for different projects, wrote Case Studies and worked on the establishment of Performance Indicators for 2015 (SoW). For Swabhiman, I wrote and checked project completion report and wrote several case studies for the annual case study book published by Swabhiman department. Looking back on my time here, I am proud on my contribution and the trust and alongside this, the responsibilities I gained. I gained insight into the everyday work of managing, monitoring and evaluating the programmes as well as the interaction among employees within the head office in Delhi. It was very important to stay with Mpeg for a longer period (> 4 weeks) to efficiently use my gained knowledge and skills. More than ever, I am included into ongoing work because I understand the process, the way Mpeg is doing the work and which data/information I miss to complete given tasks in time. They are children of minor farmers and daily wagers who have migrated from nearby regions in search of livelihood.

I am currently Pursuing Psychology Honors and being with the IP department of MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP and getting to interact with the heads of renowned corporates directly and indirectly had been an enriching opportunity. The reason behind perusing this internship was to try and give back something to the society that it has given me, and working for the education of underprivileged children seemed like the best thing to do. But after Joining MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP and knowing in detail about its grass root processing and all that it did to transform lives of helpless people, I realized it’s so much more. “Being a fresher, this was the first time I was exposed to a formal workplace, which, indeed, was an enthralling experience. After being cognizant of the kind of the work done by MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP in general, and STeP specifically, I felt contended and relieved that, in this modern capitalistic world, there still are some people, some organization which are working for the greater good of society, and helping marginalized group of people by playing a role of catalyzed to uplift them from the abysmal condition many of them find themselves in. The wide array of work done here at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP surprised me. Since my stint with the organization was only for a small tenure of 3 weeks, or 15 working days to be specific, I was allotted a small fraction of work, which, I tried to complete with utmost sincerity and diligence. Some of the works which I was allotted include writing case studies or success stories of candidates who were trained at different STeP centers across India mentioning about their family background, about how they were trained and bagged jobs, and how STeP played a catalyzing role in bringing a positive change in their, and their family’s life. After going through the raw data about them, I felt desolate that there are so many people in our nation who are devoid of resources, who face harsh side of life, but at the same time motivated me that no matter how big the problems are, one, if he is motivated and confident, can cross those hurdles to emerge victorious in life. Some other work which were allotted to me include speaking to ROs of different STeP centers and coordinating with them to get the raw data transferred on updated excel based questionnaire which help STeP employees track the necessary information easily. Writing in brief about various programs conducted across India was also one of the few works that were assigned to me. Now, when my stint is about to get over, I, wholeheartedly, enjoyed the work that was assigned to me and tried my best to complete the work to the best of my abilities. There are a lot of positives that I would be carrying after this internship. The always exuberant and cheerful attitude of employees motivated me to strive better and brought a Mpeg on my face. The punctuality and diligence of people here enlightened me about work culture which I wasn’t exposed to hitherto. I shall keep these points in my mind whenever and wherever I am assigned work. “Volunteering at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP under Swabhiman, I understood that altering people’s lives is not a myth. The vision and concept of Swabhiman has had a great influence on me, improving my perspective on life. Change begins at home. ‘You educate a man, you educate an individual; you educate a woman, you educate the Nation’. Once you show them the right direction, women are willing to amend the entire community. During the capacity building sessions at Swabhiman, I grasped the significance of offering a child the choice of informed decision. After they realise what is right from wrong, they can guide their respective communities in the appropriate direction. Apart from reporting the daily proceedings, I had an excellent opportunity to observe how Swabhiman as a programme took initiative to transform itself by objective evaluation of their capabilities and future possibilities. My project responsibilities for the internship were to provide analysis of the sessions and preparing reports to be presented to the supporters of Swabhiman. I was also included in various events related to the organization. In addition, I helped to organize the training sessions on women’s issues attended by the volunteers, health educators and beneficiaries, which added yet another facet to my understanding of Swabhiman’s community relations. The environment that I worked in was dedicated and encouraging; I was treated as a friend and a colleague from the initial day and was wholeheartedly welcomed to the Swabhiman team.”

“As a part of my MBA course, I was required to work with an NGO, so that I get an exposure as to what and how things are done in a NGO. I choose to work for MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP. At MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP I was provided an opportunity to work with the Outreach team for MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP on Wheels program. During my stint at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP, I was able to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge of what goes behind making MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP on wheels program a success. Initially, in order to sensitize on different kind of works done by the outreach team, I was given a task of proofreading a report that was to be submitted to the donor. This task helped me get an inside knowledge on the various activities carried on by the outreach team. After this I was asked to plan activities for a year time which included six health camps, fifteen IEC camps and fifteen special health camps. This task required me to understand the kind of programs that MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP could conduct. Further, it also required me to keep in mind the kind of people who would benefit with these programs. My responsibility was to come up with activities that would have an impact on maximum number of people in the target group. After this, I was asked to go to a MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP on Wheels camp to see how things are done at the ground level. I along with the Mpeg on Wheels team visited Sanjay Camp at Chanakyapuri. There I was able to gain practical knowledge as to what happens in a health camp. It was quite an eye opener for me seeing the health condition of the people living in that slum area. I got to know how SOW was making a huge impact on these people. It was surprising to see how some people are totally dependents on camps like these as they cannot afford to go to hospital. However, this program made me aware about how so many things can be done for the betterment of the society. During my internship, I also got an opportunity to work on MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP on Wheels Management Information System (SOW MIS). MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP on wheels is a PAN India program and has been trying to go online in order to manage the information and data. My responsibility was to go through the website and provide feedback to the developer about the changes and additions that were required to make the website more users friendly. Further, I was also asked to prepare a user guide for the program coordinators. I prepared a user guide with all the steps to be followed with the supporting pictures. This guide has been prepared in such a way that anyone can use the website easily with the help of the guide. Further I was also asked to feed data in the website. Data for vehicle, equipment for the different running projects has been entered in the website. This internship has taught me many things and helped me grow my personality. The things that I have learned here will of great help in my career ahead. During this period I was engaged in the work of the MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP Twin e-Learning Programme (STeP), Outreach, MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP on Wheels (SoW) and shortly Swabhiman. I enjoyed my time with MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP. The work everybody does here cannot be honoured high enough. The people are all very helpful – especially when the language barrier stops me of continuing my work and the coherence among the team members is impressive. After a slow start of getting to know the workflow and the programmes, I asked to be more included into the work and in response got more responsibilities in the STeP team (individually renewing the Case Study management & working on centre proposals). The longer my experience with MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP the more trust was put into me on working on several tasks individually – mainly in the Outreach & SoW department – which I appreciate a lot. Besides the above mentioned tasks, I went on a field appraisal on a potential new centre in South Delhi and wrote due diligence documents to present prospective centres to the donor for STeP. My engagement for Outreach & SoW covered research on current health issues in the respective areas of intervention, writing, compiling and checking monthly, quarterly, annual and completion reports for different projects, wrote Case Studies and worked on the establishment of Performance Indicators for 2015 (SoW). For Swabhiman, I wrote and checked project completion report and wrote several case studies for the annual case study book published by Swabhiman department. Looking back on my time here, I am proud on my contribution and the trust and alongside this, the responsibilities I gained. I gained insight into the everyday work of managing, monitoring and evaluating the programmes as well as the interaction among employees within the head office in Delhi. When I took him to the doctor his scalp looked scary, now he has recovered and is so happy.

When Rita and Sandeep had Ram narayan six months back the condition of their family was bad. Ram Narayan’s elder sister was down with a bout of viral fever. Being daily wage earners it became very difficult for them to bear so much expenses. Even though Ram Narayan was born in a government hospital, his parents took him back home against the advice of the doctors because his sister also had to be looked after.

Soon after the baby’s scalp started to turn red and flakes began to appear on his scalp. Initially the mother did not notice but when the flakes turned heavy she began to go to a local doctor to cure her baby but he could not do much. After hearing about the Smile on Wheels, Rita took her baby to the clinic where he was prescribed an ointment. Ram Narayan began to recover in no time and his parents are overjoyed that he is growing up healthy and happy.

RITA DEVI

We are old and poor. Our health is failing. We only find relief in each other.

82 year old Rita devi lives with her husband in a tin shanty in the middle of a congested and unhygienic Chennai slum. When their children refused to take care of them they had no option but to suffer silently. There was no one who could provide them warmth. Her husband is slowly losing his eye sight and both husband and wife are suffering from many other health problems due to their age. The families in slums like these do not have time to care for diseases or even if they do they do not have a choice because they have to earn their daily bread and look after their families. Most people in these slums suffer in silence, often losing their lives to curable diseases.

It was through her friends that Mission Education Program of MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP came to know about Purnima and her brothers. After much discussions and talks with her grandparents Purnima was finally admitted at the centre. She currently studies in class 6, her brother Shubh is in class 3 and another of her brother Som will come to class 1. Very soon their hard work and dreams are going to bear fruit and they are going to be successful.

ABHISHEK

Abhishek’s mother left her new-born boy by a street probably because she was afraid to face the society. The baby was lying on road crying. Hundreds of people noticed the crying baby, but it was Salma a eunuch picked the baby and took him to her small house in Khapri, Mumbai. Salma named the little boy Abhishek and started raising him as a son. Abhishek became the world for Salma. Days were passing and Abhishek was growing. She wanted to bring all the happiness in his life. She wanted to send Abhishek to school.

But her poor financial condition was a problem and kept worring her. It was during a counseling session conducted by MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP in the locality that Salma came to know about a bridge course centre of MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP. She visited the centre and discussed her problems and concerns. MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP advised Salma to get Abhishek enrolled in Navjyoti School free of any cost, located within the campus of Navjeevan village.

Abhishek has recently turned 12. And has passed the seventh standard with flying colours. It has been 8 years since Abhishek has joined the Mission Education centre. He is a multi-talented and jovial kid and is popular among his peers. He takes part in all curricular and academic activities. He aspires to become a pilot of the India Air Force.

DIMPLE

A 10 year old jovial and ambitious Dimple was made to drop out of school by her parents. But this young girl fought to achieve what was rightfully hers.

Dimple’s mother keeps very unwell, leaving her husband alone to win bread for the family. Dimple’s father works in a medical shop, earning only Rs 3500/- per month. More than half of the amount is drained out in the medical treatment of Dimple’s mother. And with what remains month’s proceedings become difficult, leaving the family in hand to mouth condition. In this situation educational expenditure of two children was a burden.

Dimple was made to stop going to school immediately after she successfully passed the 2nd grade. Her parents took educating the son as priority. And Dimple was asked to do the household chores to support her ailing mother. Hurt with this Dimple tried reasoning with her father. But Dimple’s wish was not considered.

But Dimple did not give up. She picked up books from her friends. Along with carrying out domestic work Dimple started studying at home.

Her determination was spotted by MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP. They counseled her parents on the importance of education for girl child also. The councilors advised her parents to enroll Dimple in the Mission Education centre run by Lepakshi Educational Society in the area which they did.

Dimple is in 5th standard now. She regularly attends her classes in centre and even helps her mother in the household chores. Dimple and her parents are grateful to MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUPfor the opportunity that was given to her.

URVI

She want to work hard and become teachers and help other children like us read and write.

This dream of Urvi and , she is very soon going to come true as of them study hard at MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP’s Mission Education centre in BHT (KALYAN), Mumbai, Maharashtra. she earlier used to take care of the household chores as their parents were off to work at the brick kiln, as daily wage earners.

Encouraged by the teachers of the Mission Education program the parents started to send the children to the centre. She is willingly attend all the classes and the parents also do not miss any of the parent-teacher meetings and are keeping a close track of their children’s academics. Like Urvi 250 other students are also receiving quality education in the same centre.

HARISH

After his mother’s death Harish began to take care of his family of two brothers and father. Cooking, cleaning, washing; he did everything. Even though he wanted to study he could not because he had to be the caretaker at home.

Harish was in class 7 when his mother expired. He had to dropm out of school to take care of his younger brothers. His father is a daily wage earner who works in the farms of Hathi Basti in the Yamuna Lines. Harish’s day would start early as he had to do all the household chores.

Harish was identified during a community mobilization drive by Mission Education program of MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP. His father was counseled and he was enrolled in the Mission Education centre Samarpan along with both of his brothers. Harish does not have to cook food everyday now as the centre provides breakfast and lunch to them and so that Harish can go home and study the centre also packs dinner for his family and sends it with him. Now studying in class 7, Harish is a promising kid. He works hard and is determined to become a Police Officer someday.

GOVIND

His early job was picking up rags and doing odd jobs. Earning two square meals a day was his only goal. His parents had big dreams for him, but poverty stopped them from dreaming any bigger.

Govind is 12 years old and lives in Hafijnagar, Bamunimaidan in Guwahati, Assam. His father is a daily wage earner. Govind spent most of his childhood in picking up rags to help his father in making both ends meet. Govind was a bright child from the beginning. His parents wanted to educate him but their situation was such that they could only dream.

The opening of a Mission Education centre in their area was a relief for them. Govind was one of the first to enroll in the centre. Govind’s progress is remarkable as he is a hardworking and a bright student. His parents, teachers and his neighbors are proud of him.

RAJESH

I study in a school and I like being here a lot

These words bring so much encouragement for a society such as ours where school dropouts and illiteracy have increased more than ever. Rajesh studies in class 3 in the MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP’s Mission Education centre in Gurgaon. Her father abandoned her mother, her and his son two years ago and to earn to eat she was sent to work as a domestic help in a house while her mother worked in a factory.

Upon much convincing by the teachers of the Mission Education program her brother was sent to school but not her. It took another round of counseling g for her mother to finally agree to send Rajesh to school. She now attends school every day and enjoys learning and playing in school.

GIRISH

There were days when we could not eat at all. We used to struggle every day.

Girish’s father passed away when he was very young. After his father’s demise everyday was a struggle for them and as a result they moved to Hyderabad city. Even moving to the city did not help much. When Girish’s mother brought him to MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP’s Mission Education centre, Karuna he was malnourished, anemic and weak. He hardly ever talked to anybody and hardly paid any attention in class.

The teachers did not lose hope and continuously supported him and encouraged him. He has improved a lot now both health wise and in his education. His mother is very happy to see all the positive changes in him.

UMESH

I will learn dance and perform in the Annual Function this time. Mother will be so happy to see me.” This is 6 year old Manvi’s New Year Resolution

With her father working as a fruit seller and mother as a maid and a family which comprised of Umesh’s grandparents and his aunt they never had enough to eat, let alone think about educating Umesh or sending her to school. A surprise visit by the teachers of MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP’s Mission Education centre in Noida bought about a huge change in Umesh’s life. The girl who once had no knowledge about alphabets or numbers now can read, write and recite poems in Hindi and English and studies in class 2 in the Mission Education centre, Noida. He is a quick learner and her parents too have shown enthusiasm by attending parent-teacher meetings regularly..

AMBER

Mother is happy and says if I study well and get a good job, she will not have to work.

So eager is this little boy to ease the burden of her mother that he has already promised to work very hard and he does so too. he goes to school every day and finishes all her work in time.

Earlier Amber used to work with her mother doing household chores for other people for a little amount of money. He did not even have time to play. An intervention by MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP’s Mission Education program changed her life completely. He now studies in class 3 of Mission Education’s centre in Noida. He is a bright student and her favorite subject is drawing. Both his mother and he are happy that he is going to school and enjoying it there.

SATYAM

Both my brothers and I go to school together now and also have our meals together now. I have my own happy stories now.

Earlier Satyam, his two brothers Som and Shubh and his grandparents, who these three children stay with, lead a life of despair and poverty. Her mother and father worked in Delhi and used to send some money every month. She usually used to take care of the household chores and her brothers. Seeing all her friends go to school and talk about it she also longed to go to school someday.

It was through her friends that Mission Education Program of MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP came to know about Satyam and her brothers. After much discussions and talks with his grandparents Satyam was finally admitted at the centre. She currently studies in class 6, his brother Shubh is in class 3 and another of his brother Som will come to class 1. Very soon their hard work and dreams are going to bear fruit and they are going to be successful.

SHLOKA

I want to help my father and mother because my father is always sick.

The story of Shloka is a sad one. Her father met with an accident some years back and is totally bed ridden and her mother works in the nearby households to earn money but whatever she earns half of it is spent on the medicines her father needs.

It was MAHARISHI PATANJALI EDUCATION GROUP’s Mission Education program that was able to rescue Shloka from her poor conditions and give a direction to her life. She now studies in class 4 in the Mission Education Centre in Max vision, Gurgaon. Her dream is to become a teacher and Mission Education is helping her realize her dream.

CHETAN

“We have a small boat now. But when I grow up, I will buy a big ship, and ask amma and appa to rest.”

Pradip’s parents make a living through boat riding in a small village of Khammam, Telangana, barely earning Rs. 3000 a month. As he grew up, Pradip too started accompanying his parents on their daily rides and would do odd jobs for people, earning a few extra rupees.

They had not wanted to part with the little additional income that he had started bringing in. But in the end, when Pradip insisted, they could not say no to their son.

Now when Pradip goes with his parents on the boat rides and they hear him talking in English with the tourists, they can’t stop smiling. He has also started teaching some English words to his parents to help them deal better with the tourists.

CHETAN

“We have a small boat now. But when I grow up, I will buy a big ship, and ask amma and appa to rest.”

Chetan’s parents make a living through boat riding in a small village of Khammam, Telangana, barely earning Rs. 3000 a month. As he grew up, Chetan too started accompanying his parents on their daily rides and would do odd jobs for people, earning a few extra rupees.

Summary of UNCRC

Article 1

Everyone under 18 years of age has all the rights in this Convention.

Article 2

The Convention applies to everyone whatever their race, religion, abilities, whatever they think or say, whatever type of family they come from.

All organisations concerned with children should work towards what is best for each child.

Governments should make these rights available to children.

Article 5

Governments should respect the rights and responsibilities of families to direct and guide their children so that, as they grow, they learn to use their rights properly.

All children have the right to life. Governments should ensure that children survive and develop healthily.

All children have the right to a legally registered name, and nationality. They have the right to know and, as far as possible, to be cared for, by their parents.

Children who cannot be looked after by their own family must be looked after properly, by people who respect their religion, culture and language.

When children are adopted the first concern must be what is best for them. The same rules should apply whether the children are adopted in the country where they were born, or if they are taken to live in another country.

Children who come into a country as refugees should have the same rights as children born in that country.

Article 23

Children who have any kind of disability should have special care and support, so that they can lead full and independent lives.

Article 24

Children have the right to good quality health care, to clean water, nutritious food, and a clean environment, so that they will stay healthy. Rich countries should help poorer countries achieve this.

Article 25

Children who are looked after by their local authority, rather than by their parents, should have someone review the situation regularly.

Article 26

The Government should provide extra money for the children of families in need.

Article 27

Children have a right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical and mental needs. The Government should help families who cannot afford to provide this.

Article 28

Children have a right to an education. Discipline in schools should respect children’s human dignity. Primary education should be free. Wealthy countries should help poorer countries achieve this.

Article 29

Education should develop each child’s personality and talents to the full. It should encourage children to respect their parents, and their own and other cultures.

Article 30

Children have a right to learn and use the language and customs of their families, whether these are shared by the majority of people in the country or not.

Article 31

All children have a right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of activities.

Article 32

The Government should protect children from work that is dangerous, or that might harm their health or their education.

Article 33

The Government should provide ways of protecting children from dangerous drugs.

Article 34

The Government should protect children from sexual abuse.

Article 35

The Government should make sure that children are not abducted or sold.

Article 36

Children should be protected from any activities that could harm their development.

Article 37

Children who break the law should not be treated cruelly. They should not be put in prison with adults and should be able to keep in contact with their families.

Article 38

Governments should not allow children under 15 to join the army. Children in war zones should receive special protection.

Article 39

Children who have been neglected or abused should receive special help to restore their self-respect.

Article 40

Children who are accused of breaking the law should receive legal help. Prison sentences for children should only be used for the most serious offences.

Article 41

If the laws of a particular country protect children better than the articles of the Convention, then those laws should stay.

Story of the Day

“I had big dreams when I was younger. But growing up taught me the harshest reality – no one wants a 21-year-old fisherman’s daughter to break from family profession and stand on her own feet. Growing up also taught me why it was necessary to do exactly that.

With an average income of Rs. 9000 a month, my parents struggled to support three young daughters. They would always sacrifice their own needs just to bring a smile on our faces. It was a happy time, but there always existed a grim reality check. I knew I needed to become independent soon, otherwise my family would not be able to bear the burden of feeding five members. There was just so much I could do in a small town of Tiharia, in Sonarpur Zone, and that would frustrate me whenever I felt helpless.

Going to college was tougher because I was trying to make my way through people who were much more educated than I was. This would often challenge my very confidence, that had pushed me to break all barriers in the first place.

Finally, in the last year of my Bachelors’ degree, the pandemic needed more health worker hands on deck to support daily needs of patients. It was a dire situation, but it was also a window of opportunity for people like me who were waiting eagerly to contribute to the system and make a living.

Without wasting time, I joined the STeP training program to develop necessary skills required to become a nurse. As soon as my 3-month course ended, I got placed in a Maternity & Nursing Home near Sonarpur. Completing 8 hours of morning as well as evening shifts, I work hard every day to ensure my job role becomes permanent in the next 6 months. I can’t wait to see the smile on my parents face when I proudly place the same amount of money they brought home when I was a little girl. For me, their duty to support the household will end the same day when I’m able to become independent.”
